Founded in 1967. It is a public research university located in the Islamabad Capital Territory, near the remote town of Nilore. the institute started its educational activities with the support of Quaid-e-Azam University, and achieved its independence in 1970; the institute gained its university status in 1997. Students reside on grounds of the 150 acres campus. It is also ranked among one of the top instituition of higher learning by the HEC.
