The sandworm is a fictional form of desert-dwelling creature from the Dune universe created by Frank Herbert. Sandworms, enormous creatures with an indefinite lifespan, live under the sand and emerge when attracted by vibrations from the surface. The worm would devour the origin of the vibrations, so to see a worm and live to tell was an extremely rare phenomenon. Their larval form, known as the sandtrout, is responsible for the production of the spice melange.
