Texture map

An image that modifies the appearance of a surface, created from painted or scanned-in two-dimensional images. These images are wrapped around the surface of a three dimensional object so that the patterns in the images curve and distort in a realistic manner.

Commonly-used texture maps include background, bump map, colour map, displacement map, environment map, reflection map, specular reflection.
