Resource interchange file format (RIFF)

Not an actual file format (like the name implies), RIFF is a tagged multimedia file structure. It is a specification upon which many file formats are defined. RIFF files have the advantage of extensibility; file formats based on RIFF can be used by future software inasmuch as format changes can be ignored by existing applications.
