Pipeline

A stage in a processor which executes a partial task. For example, a memory pipeline might use pipelined (sequential) stages to calculate the address, read the value of the memory cell, and store the value in a register. A pipeline allows starting the execution of a cycle before a previous cycle has been completed. A processor can start to execute a complex instruction in a pipeline before the preceding instruction has been completed.
