A method of detecting the presence of specific nucleic acid sequences within a cytological preparation. A DNA or RNA probe is labeled, radioactively or chemically, and hybridised to a cytological preparation to detect RNA, or to a denatured cytological preparation to detect complementary DNA. The hybridization is detected by autoradiography (for radioactive probes) or by chromogenic reactions or fluorescence (for chemically-labeled probes).
