Hierarchical storage management (HSM)
A function that automatically distributes and manages data on disk, tape, or both by regarding devices of these types and potentially others as levels in a storage hierarchy that range from fast, expensive devices to slower, cheaper, and possibly removable devices. The objectives are to minimise access time to data and maximise available media capacity. See also recall, storage hierarchy, migrate.
