A) A memory structure in which data is entered at one end and removed from the other. A FIFO is used as a buffer to connect two devices that operate asynchronously. b) A storage device (parallel shift register) which operates as a Turing machine to buffer asynchronous data where the first data stored is the first data read out. FIFOs are used to store video and act as “rubber-band” type buffers to keep a steady video stream where memory and system clock speeds do not match. FIFOs have less delays than standard shift registers as input and output are controlled by separate clocks.
