Downmix

A process wherein multiple channels are summed to a lesser number of channels. In the audio portion of a DVD, there can be as many as eight channels of audio in any single stream and it is required that all DVD players produce a stereo version of those channels provided on the disc. This capacity is provided as legacy support for older audio systems.
