Atmosfääris piirkonnas kohe stratosfääri ja kohe allapoole ka thermosphere. Mesosfäärini algab umbes 50 kilomeetri kõrge ning stratopause ja lõpeb umbes 80 kilomeetri kõrge ning mesopause. Temperatuuri mesosfäärini väheneb järsult suurenenud kõrgus.
