Vertical size (from the top to the bottom of the screen) can be reduced making objects appear short and squat or increased making objects appear tall and thin. Vertical size which is not unity is distortion.

The control comes from analog video where a control was made available to compensate for unstable sweep circuitry. Vertical size in digital video is controlled by line replication or line interpolation.
