transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
TENS, a CAM therapy useful to relieve labor pains, uses electrodes to stimulate nerve pathways to the uterus and cervix. The theory is that this stimulation jams other sensory inputs along those pathways, such as pain. The intensity of stimulation is controlled by the laboring woman.
