A naturally occurring organic compound, of the general empirical formula, C₁₀H₁₆, biologically built from a naturally occurring "monomer" called isoprene, C₅H₈, which is found as a volatile oil in plants. A clearly important--and olfactorily obvious--example is alpha-terpinene found in lemon oil.
