tape skew

The deviation of a tape from following a linear path when transported across the heads, causing a time displacement between signals recorded on different tracks and amplitude differences between the outputs from individual tracks owing to variations in azimuth alignment. The adjectives static and dynamic are used to distinguish between the steady and fluctuating components of tape skew.
