sulfate-bearing soils
On silts where the groundwater contains more than 0.1% of SO3, or where a clay soil has more than 0.5% of this substance, the use of lime-free cement in all concrete work is essential to prevent the resulting chemical attack. High-alumina cement gives complete protection, but a sulfate-resisting cement to British Standard 12 may be used where conditions are less severe.
