sovereign
English gold coin, made from 22 carat gold and first minted in London in 1816 under Queen Victoria. Due to Britain's numerous colonies, the sovereign became widely accepted and used worldwide and was long regarded as the quintessential unit of currency and investment. Half sovereigns were also issued.
