(i) Protection of the soil against physical loss by erosion or against chemical deterioration; that is, excessive loss of fertility by either natural or artificial means. (ii) A combination of all management and land use methods that safeguard the soil against depletion or deterioration by natural or by human-induced factors. (iii) The branch of soil science that deals with soil conservation (i) and (ii).
