real asset
Also: non-fixed-income asset, tangible asset. Assets with a lasting value (e.g. real estate, precious metals, inventories of commodities or goods, shares). As a rule, an investment in real assets offers better protection against inflation and greater security against the depreciation of a currency over the long term than nominal claims (e.g. bonds). They are, however, subject to greater fluctuations in value. See also real asset clause.
