peat-to-anthracite theory
The theory that there were progressive stages in the conversion of vegetable matter into the various grades of coal of the Carboniferous system. Thus, peat forms at an early stage in coal formation and lignite at an intermediate stage, and by further compression and alteration, bituminous and anthracite coals were formed.
