osmotic potential
The potential energy acting upon soil water due to the effect of solutes. Solution in contact with pure water will draw water from the reservoir of pure water due to the decrease in potential energy, i.e., osmotic poential, of the solution relative to the pure water. Osmotic potential equals the product of the universal gast constant, R, the temperature, T, and the total molar concentration of solutes, C(=RTC).
