These are hydrocarbons such as ethylene, butane, hexane, propane and, by definition, exclude the first member of that analogous series, CH₄. Large quantities of NMHCs are emitted from vegetation, the vast majority as isoprene, C₅H₈. The natural emission of isoprene is significant compared to that of anthropogenic NMHC.
