A term for the mid section of the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths from around 2 or 3 μm (varying with the author), to around 25 μm. This is the region commonly referred to when discussing the infrared spectra of chemical compounds, organic or inorganic, and minerals.
