hyung

Hyung — which can also be romanized as hyeong — (형) is a Korean honorific. It means “older brother” and is used by men to refer to men who are older than them. Similar to oppa, while it can be used to refer to family members, it can also be a sign of respect and proximity between two people. This term differs from oppa, however, in that the latter is a gender specific term used only by women and the former is exclusive to men.

Just like the other honorifics displayed in this blossary, this term is also used by Western k-pop fans to male celebrities (although this specific term seems not to be as widely used as oppa and unnie).
