direct DNA uptake (direct gene transfer)

A transformation procedure in which naked DNA is added to a suspension of protoplasts. The protoplasts are then rendered naked by disrupting the cell membrane through chemical treatment (i.e., PEG) or through electroporation allowing DNA to pass into the cell.
