compensation

(geology) The hypothetical, geological process by which the Earth's crust and interior adjust themselves to stay in or close to static equilibrium in spite of the constant shift, by geological forces, of matter from one part of the surface to another. A familiar example of such shifting of matter is the erosion of mountains by water and the deposition of that matter on the bottom of lakes or seas.
