combining ability
The ability of a genotype (inbred, pureline, or synthetic/composite) to transfer its desirable traits to its crosses. General combining ability is the average performance of a strain in a series of crosses; specific combining ability is a deviation in a cross from performance predicted on the basis of general combining ability of the parents.
