Structural unit of the cell nucleus which carries in linear order the genes responsible for the determination and transmission of hereditary characteristics. The term is applicable not only to the nuclear chromosomes but more loosely to the DNA of viruses, bacteria, and the chloroplast and mitochondria of eukaryotes.
