CHCl₃, a colorless liquid that evaporates easily into the air. The compound is released into the air by direct and indirect sources and breaks down in the lower atmosphere into carbon dioxide, phosgene (carbonic dichloride), and hydrogen chloride. The degradation occurs in the troposphere by the reaction of the compound with hydroxyl radicals.
