aerial perspective
A painting technique that creates the illusion of distance in an otherwise 2D landscape by using paler colors and vague forms to denote objects further from the viewer, and brighter and sharper outlines for objects closest to the viewer. A classic example of this technique can be seen in Leonardo da Vinci's Ginevra de Benci.
