Truncation
a) Deletion of lower significant bits on a digital system.
Usually results in digital noise. b) Shortening the word length of a sample or coefficient by removing low-order bits. c) To terminate a computational process in accordance with some rule. For example, when digital mixing or other operations create extra bits per sample (such as 16 bits from multiplication of two 8-bit samples), it is usually necessary at some point to truncate (or round) the result back to the original bit length, and to apply some rule to the correction of the part retained. Various rules have been introduced for how this may be done with digital video images for the least noticeable result.
