Major French electronics firm that recently purchased GE/RCA Consumer Electronics and previously purchased German consumer electronics interests, the latter sometimes referred to as International Thomson.

Through its GE/RCA holdings, Thomson is a proponent of the ACTV ATV schemes; through International Thomson, it has proposed progressive schemes. Thomson also sells television production equipment and for a time owned the production equipment branch of CBS Laboratories, then called Thomson-CSF Laboratories.
