S-VHS (Super VHS)

a) An improved version of the VHS tape format capable of recording better picture resolution (definition). A higher-density tape is required which provides a wider luminance bandwidth, resulting in sharper picture quality (>400 horizontal lines vs. 240 for standard VHS) and improved signal-to-noise ratio. Because the equipment is usually smaller and lighter than 3/4" equipment, it is ideally suited for ENG/EFP applications. b) Super VHS, a consumer videotape format offering horizontal resolution somewhat greater than that offered by NTSC broadcasting but allowing component recording and playback without cross-luminance or cross-color artifacts through a four-pin S-Video connection.
