One Child Policy

One Child Policy, which is to encourage one-child families, is introduced to relieve economic, social, and environment problems through the population control policy in 1980s, from an article . This limit was heavily enforced in urban areas with rural families allowed to have a second child if the first child is a daughter. Even though decreased population growth is what China was aiming for, recently there are negative effects due to the policy. The continued trend of burden on the working youth who must support their elderly has caused the four-two-one problem from a reading ; one adult supports two parents and four grandparents. Additionally due to China's strong cultural imperative for the preference of male offspring, this policy has exacerbated gender imbalance that has led to claims of female infanticide.
