Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem)
The government agency responsible for regulating the energy market in the UK. It describes its purpose as "protecting consumers... by promoting competition... and regulating the monopoly companies which run the gas and electricity networks". Its aims also include curbing climate change by helping energy providers meet environmental goals. There is also a non-governmental equivalent, the consumer watchdog Energywatch.
