The Office for Accreditation of the American Library Association serves the public, students, employers, and library and information studies Master's degree programs through the promotion and advancement of education in the field of library science and information studies. The Office for Accreditation regularly reviews and evaluates master’s level library and information science programs to ensure quality. It promotes diversity in library education and assists universities in developing and improving graduate library education. Since most libraries will hire only librarians who graduate from an ALA-accredited program, this office has the responsibility of ensuring fairness and high standards in MLS and MLIS degree programs.
