Midleton Very Rare

Midleton Very Rare is a premium blended Irish whiskey by the Irish Distillers Group located the East Cork town of Midleton. Distilled three times by John Jameson and Son, the whiskey is carefully aged in individually chosen oak casks. Midleton Very Rare is available only in strictly limited quantities as just a small number of casks of the finest distillates are personally selected by the Master Distiller each year. It is reserved for the appreciation of only the most discerning judges of fine whiskeys. Each bottle is individually numbered and each label signed by the Master Distiller at the Midleton Distillery as a final guarantee of outstanding quality.

A blend of three different types of whiskey are used in Midleton Very Rare -- malt whiskey, grain whiskey, and a third malt whiskey produced from crystal malt. Being a slightly caramelized version of malted barley, crystal malt has a rich texture for a good blend. Layers of sweetness (honeyed vanilla, rummy molasses, toasted marshmallow) are balanced by toasted nuts, dried fruit, and dark chocolate. Very dynamic and with plenty of grit. Midleton Very Rare receives 90 Pts from Malt Advocate.

Midleton distillery started life as a woolen manufacturing business in 1796. By the 1820s the buildings were lying empty until three brothers James, Daniel and Jeremiah Murphy decided to convert the buildings for the manufacture of whiskey. Initially run as a family concern calling themselves James Murphy & Co they ultimately merged with several other distillers in the area to be come known as the Cork Distillers Company.

In 1966, the company joined forces with their city rivals John Jameson and John Powers. Together, these three formed what is now known as the Irish Distillers Group. The newly formed Irish Distillers Group decided that a new all purpose distillery would be built and Midleton with it room for expansion was chosen as the site for the today's Midleton Distillery Co.
