Mao is a series of art worked created by Andy in the early 1970s, when he grew interested in the politics in China and made the portraits based on a photograph from Mao's famous Little Red Book.

This portrait was first shown for a Warhol exhibition at the Hokin Gallery, Chicago,in 1977, the year the Cultural Revolution in China officially ended following Mao’s death in 1976.The art work is not allowed for exhibition in mainland China due to its innovative presentation of a much-revered leader of the

Chinese Communist Party .
