International Monetary Fund
Abbreviation: IMF. The most important international organization for monetary policy cooperation. The IMF, like the World Bank, was established in 1944 in Bretton Woods and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. Its aims are to monitor and stabilize the international financial system to prevent crises such as the crash of 1929. Switzerland joined in May 1992. Website: www.imf.org.
