Hotchkiss superdip
Much more sensitive than the common dip needle. The instrument consists of a magnetic needle free to rotate about a horizontal axis and a nonmagnetic bar with a counterweight at the end which is attached to the needle at its pivot, the two axes making an angle that can be varied. It measures changes in the total field and can be used to measure variations in the vertical field if its plane is oriented in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic meridian.
