Egyptian presidential election
Egypt held its first presidential election in 29 years on May 23, 2012. The election came at the end of the toppled Hosni Mubarak regime, and is occurring two weeks before Mubarak's sentencing on corruption and other charges. There are 13 candidates for the presidency, and it is expected that no clear winner will emerge. A follow-up election is scheduled for June 16, with the winner to be announced June 21. The 2012 election features candidates from a wide variety of backgrounds, including supporters of the Mubarak regime as well as candidates from the Muslim Brotherhood.
