Don't Jerk and Drive

A December 2014 advertising campaign by South Dakota to reach out to drivers who tend to overcorrect by jerking the wheel when they hit icy patches—causing car accidents. Many viewers of the ad saw it as less about sharply turning their steering wheels and more about fulfilling personal urges while on the road. The strong reactions forced the state's department of public safety to pull the TV commercials and social media promotions. They argued the innuendo surrounding the ad might distract people from the original goal to save lives on the road. However, the highway safety office insisted the double entendre was intentionally inserted to get people's attention.

In icy conditions, drivers should avoid the urge to jerk the steering wheel, an ad for the campaign stated. "Resist the urge to jerk the steering wheel. Over correcting only creates more chaos," the narrator says. "Besides, nobody likes a jerker."
