Dolby Atmos

Dolby Atmos is a three dimentional audio technology created by Dolby Laboratories. There are two versions of the system; The home variant diverts multiple speakers towards the ceiling in order for the sounds to then bounce of the surfaces, and the cinema variant which involves installing multiple, specifically positioned speakers on the cinema ceiling to create the unique sound. The cinema variant is able to control individual sounds through the use of these multiple speakers to create another level in three dimensional sound.

The technology was designed in April 2012 and was first utilized in Pixar's Brave with it then being pushed through its paces in the award winning film Gravity in 2013.
