Located in East Africa, Burundi is a landlocked country that is considered to be one of the world's poorest nations, and has experienced a twelve-year civil war between two of its ethnic groups: a Tutsi minority, and a Hutu majority. The republic has a population of around 8.5 million (2010), and the city of Bujumbura as its capital.
