Once a thriving multi-ethnic manufacturing and transportation center on Lake Erie, suburban flight and aging industries have reduced its population to 300,000 (metro 1,184,000) at the end of the century. Nearby Niagara Falls, a natural wonder shared with Canada, is a major tourist attraction especially associated with honeymoons. The Niagara also produces power for the region.
