A primary transcript of adjacent rRNA genes (16S,23S, and 5S rRNA genes in prokaryotes; 18S, 5.8S, and 28S rRNA genes in eukaryotes) plus flanking and spacer DNA that must be processed to release the mature rRNA molecules.
