Balance is a compositional technique in photography that juxtaposes images within a frame so that the objects are of equal visual weight, which means that it is a distribution of visual elements throughout an image that lets a viewer’s eyes scan the entire frame without being drawn too much to one specific area. When different parts of a photo command one’s attention equally, perfect balance is achieved. In photography, there are two main techniques of balance one should be aware of: formal and informal. In theory, balance is most effective when a composition has perfect symmetry, which is when the left and right sides and top and bottom of a frame are the same and balanced by their opposites. People are unlikely to shoot many symmetrical scenes, though; it should be known how to achieve balance without having symmetry.
