An artificial structure placed on the ocean floor to provide a hard substrate for sea life to colonize. Artificial reefs are constructed by sinking dense materials, such as old ships and barges, concrete ballasted tyre units, concrete and steel demolition debris and dredge rock on the sea floor within designated reef sites.
