(1) A character or graphic string whose length is not fixed, but variable within limits. See also fixed-length string.
(2) A character, graphic, or binary string whose length is not fixed but can range within set limits.
Industry:Software
(1) A character other than a 7-bit ASCII character. An extended character can be a 1-byte code point with the eighth bit set (ordinal 128 through 255).
(2) Double-byte characters that are stored in a DBCS font file, not in the hardware of a DBCS-capable work station. When displaying or printing extended characters, the work station receives them from the DBCS font table under control of the extended character processing function of the operating system. See also basic character.
Industry:Software
(1) A character represented by a plus sign (+) that lets a command be extended to more than one line.
(2) In REXX, a character represented by a comma that lets a clause be extended to more than one line. This character is functionally replaced by a blank and cannot be used in the middle of a string or comment.
Industry:Software
(1) A character string attached to the end of a file name that helps identify its file type.
(2) A distinguished name that identifies the top entry in a locally held directory hierarchy. Because of the relative naming scheme used in Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), this suffix applies to every other entry within that directory hierarchy. A directory server can have multiple suffixes, each identifying a locally held directory hierarchy.
Industry:Software
(1) A character string considered as a unit for a given purpose.
(2) A fundamental unit of storage that refers to the amount of data that can be processed at a time. Word size is a characteristic of the computer architecture. See also doubleword, halfword.
Industry:Software
(1) A functional unit that interconnects multiple LANs (locally or remotely) that use the same logical link control protocol but that can use different medium access control protocols. A bridge forwards a frame to another bridge based on the medium access control (MAC) address.
(2) In the connexion of local loops, channels, or rings, the equipment and techniques used to match circuits and to facilitate accurate data transmission.
Industry:Software
(1) A set of CICS systems within a CICSplex that can be managed as a single entity.
(2) In CICSPlex SM topology, the user-defined name, description, and content information for a CICS system group. A CICS system group can be made up of CICS systems or other CICS system groups.
(3) In CICS business transaction services (BTS), a BTS set, that is the set of CICS regions across which BTS processes and activities may execute.
Industry:Software
(1) A functional unit that records events and physical conditions, usually with respect to time.
(2) A named and stateful object with which the user code interacts and that logs messages for a specific system or application component.
Industry:Software
(1) A set of classes that embodies an abstract design for solutions to a family of related problems.
(2) A set of class libraries encompassing the following: Functions (or set of functions) of a particular domain arranged in an inheritance hierarchy. An encoded model for use of the framework that defines the relationships between the classes in the framework and the rules that govern their use. Frameworks call the code; the user does not call the frameworks.
(3) A set of object classes that provide a collection of related functions for a user or piece of software.
(4) A micro-architecture that provides an extensible template for applications within a specific domain.
Industry:Software
(1) A general-purpose, high-level, programming language, particularly suitable for EXEC procedures or programmes for personal computing.
(2) The i5/OS implementation of the Systems Application Architecture Procedures Language. REXX is a programming language that is supported by an interpreter provided as part of the i5/OS licenced program.
