Company Profile:
An international scientific society that fosters the transfer of knowledge and practices to sustain global soils. Based in Madison, WI, and founded in 1936, SSSA is the professional home for 6,000+ members dedicated to advancing the field of soil science. It provides information about soils in ...
Mineral soils that have an oxic horizon within 2 m of the surface or plinthite as a continuous phase within 30 cm of the surface, and that do not have a spodic or argillic horizon above the oxic horizon. (An order in the U. S. system of soil taxonomy. )

Si8Mg2Al2O20(OH)2(OH2). 4H2O (i) A fibrous clay mineral composed of two silica tetrahedral sheets and one aluminum and magnesium octahedral sheet that make up the 2:1 layer that occurs in strips. The strips that have an average width of two linked tetrahedral chains are linked at the edges forming tunnels where water molecules are held. Palygorskite is most common in soils of arid regions. Also referred to as attapulgite. (ii) A magnesium aluminum silicate clay used in fertilizer production, including conditioning of fertilizer products, and as a suspending agent in suspension fertilizers.
Industry:Earth science
Recognizable units within a soil material which are distinguishable from the enclosing material for any reason such as origin (deposition as an entity), differences in concentration of some fraction of the plasma, or differences in arrangement of the constituents (fabric).
Industry:Earth science
A technique for demonstrating or estimating nitrogenase activity by measuring the rate of acetylene (C2H2) reduction to ethylene (C2H4).
Industry:Earth science
Slow, viscous downslope flow of water-saturated regolith. Rates of flow vary widely. The presence of frozen substrate or even freezing and thawing is not implied in the original definition. However, one component of solifluction can be creep of frozen ground. The term is commonly applied to processes operating in both seasonal frost and permafrost areas.
Industry:Earth science
An extensive layer of till, having an uneven or undulating surface; a deposit of rock and mineral debris dragged along, in, on, or beneath a glacier and emplaced by processes including basal lodgement and release from downwasting stagnant ice by ablation.
Industry:Earth science
Reduction-oxidation.
Industry:Earth science
Algorithms that use simplified arithmetic and logical operations to derive approximate solutions to complex formulas, such as differential equations, describing a soil process.
Industry:Earth science
An application of fertilizer to a soil surface, without incorporation, after the crop is established.
Industry:Earth science
Permafrost occurring in some areas beneath the exposed land surface throughout a geographic region where other areas are free of permafrost.
