The preferred term for the shorter wavelengths in the infrared region extending from about 0. 75 μm (visible red), to around 2 or 3 μm (varying with the author). The longer wavelength end grades into the middle infrared. The term really emphasizes the radiation reflected from plant materials, which peaks around 0. 85 μm. It is also called solar infrared, as it is only available for use during the daylight hours.
Industry:Earth science
The branch of physical geography that deals with the areal distributions of soils.
Industry:Earth science
That portion of the total rainfall precipitation which becomes available for plant growth.
Industry:Earth science
The entry of water into soil.
Industry:Earth science
The process whereby free water and its constituents move by preferred pathways through a porous medium. Also called bypass flow.
Industry:Earth science
The upward force acting on a particle because it is suspended in water.
Industry:Earth science
The sum of the separate energy components acting upon soil water expressed as energy per weight (head) or energy per volume (potential).
Industry:Earth science
That portion of precipitation that falls through or drips off of a plant canopy.
Industry:Earth science
Vertisols of arid regions that if not irrigated during the year have cracks in 6 or more out of 10 years that remain closed for less than 60 consecutive days during a period when the soil temperature at a depth of 50 cm from the surface is higher than 8°C.
